Recently I had an opportunity to support a blind children’s fund. Sealing the envelope, I wondered how many of them had never seen flowers or witnessed a sunrise. A sadness surrounded my heart.
May rains, I thought, which were already upon us blanketing the crusty dry ground while fueling hundreds of flowers, had awakened myriads of colors. However, this picture will be vastly different to those blind children. Warm to hot June temperatures would invite even more beauty painting the vast landscape and amazing many vacationers. Again, what about the precious blind children and other blind people, will they miss this miraculous gift from God?
What is this world of blindness? How does one live in it? We know of braille, seeing eye dogs, and schools for the blind, but is there more? Extensive research has shown that while the sighted see objects differently than the blind there are commonalities. And colors can be related to what they know.
Fanny Crosby, blind from childhood, is renowned for her prolific hymn writing and saw her blindness not as a limitation but as a gift from God. A gift which led to a deeper understanding and appreciation of God’s plan for her life. So could it be that eyes actually blind us to what really needs to be seen. Do we need to plan on “blind seeing” vs “sight-seeing” as we plan our vacations?
Some animals such as Jaguars are born blind and after a few weeks can see. What about us? Most of us are born with sight, but can we really see what is most important, most beautiful, most meaningful. Could it be that we are actually born blind and need Jesus to help us really, see?
What does God have to say? The one who made our eyes. In John chapter 9 verse 39 to 41 He clearly states that He came to give sight to the blind and blindness to those who think they are seeing! And is there more?
In Ephesians 1:18 we find that there are different eyes that can enhance our experience on this planet. We read, “ the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of His calling…riches of his glory of His inheritance in the saints”! And there is more!
These verses invite us to deep dive! And perhaps meet up with those children who, as they can only smell and touch those flowers, will see them better than we!
We can also meet in Word. And if you are not there yet, contact us and we will be happy to talk or pray with you. We are here for you!
