I have always loved going to bible study group. On this night it was so exciting to discuss our study topic, that I stayed much later than I usually did. New and deep nuggets of gold continued to surface that were life-changing for me.
When I drove out of the parking lot I noticed the time and realized I needed to hurry to get home. My roommate and I had recently moved to this area for work, and were still tentatively finding our way around. As GPS was far in the future, we used maps and memory! I took the same streets each week and was beginning to feel comfortable with the route.
Reaching to turn the radio on to my favorite station, I noticed that the car behind me seemed unusually close. I increased my speed a bit and it appeared to do the same. This caught my attention and I began to pray for God to be with me. Suddenly I remembered what my dad had taught me. If I suspected someone was following me I should drive straight to the nearest police station. The only problem was, I had no idea where the nearest precinct was located, so I decided to see if the car would keep following me if I made additional turns.
Praying, I began to take more turns but was careful not to get lost. Knowing that I would soon be nearing our parking lot, my prayers intensified! I remembered Jeremiah 29:11-13, that told me if I would call Him for help He would hear me. Now aloud I cried, “Lord help me” and suddenly a plan came to my mind.
The turn into our apartment complex was sharp and if you weren’t paying attention you could easily miss it. The Holy Spirit guided me as in my mind’s eye I could see where I should quickly park and run to the back of the building. Since this was unfamiliar to people who didn’t live there, I could then make my way up the back stairs to our apartment.
Remembering Psalms 91:4, I knew He would be with me, so I quickly I made the turn and whispered a short prayer, “Oh God I know that you love me and can protect me”. Dashing out of the car I followed His plan. As I rounded the back of the building, I could hear footsteps running up the front steps of my building. It felt like my heart almost stopped, and then it happened! I literally ran over a man who was on the ground, crawling by the windows of the ground level apartments. In my utter disbelief I stopped, then, remembering the assurance I had been given, that God was with me, there was no space left for fear, so I kept on going!
As I turned to run, I heard sirens splitting the warm night air. I paused again in disbelief as over the wail of sirens, I heard footsteps hurrying back down the front steps of my apartment building! Love just in time!
In a blur I made my way to my apartment, key in hand and opened the door before my roommate had time to unlock it. My roommate was astonished to hear my tale, she explained that the police had been called because a man had been seen crawling by the windows of the ground level apartments. Before I called, my Lord had answered. In Isaiah 65:24, God assures us that he knows what we will need even before we do. That night that person had been reported to the police even before I had arrived.
I realize that there are times we may doubt God’s timing. Things do not always happen this way; but even though each of our lives are different, God loves us all equally. John 3:16 says it perfectly, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on Him should not perish but shall have eternal life”. That life can start as soon as we accept Him and continue here and into eternal life.
God’s love is rooted and grounded in Who He is, and What He is, not as the world may try to define Him today! He is seen in the special love between a husband and a wife, as a man and a woman. The love between a mother and her child, His love on a battlefield when a soldier gives his or her life for another, during times of war.
His changeless love also offers stability to Grace Abound Ministries, and you are a part of that love. Your prayers and donations keep us serving amidst the calm, and troubled waters which confront us daily.
